SURROUNDED BY FEMINISM
Among all the things deemed politically correct these days perhaps nothing is as dominating as
feminism - at least not in Sweden. Anyone posing any kind of question that puts the so called elite
feminists' model of the world in doubt is quickly put to shame and depicted as the incarnation of evil.
All of the main political parties in Sweden (except the Christian Democrats as far as I know) consider themself
to be feministic parties (whatever that means), and evenso a new left wing feminist party is about to be
launched by former communist leader Gudrun Schyman. Also the Social Democrats have launched a new network
called Feministas led by Marita Ulvskog.
For a classic liberal, such as myself, it's hard not to get exhausted by all this. While it's certainly true
that every individual should have the same rights it's not true (as most of these people seem to think) that
every individual is actually the same, except that if they happen to be a woman we should feel sorry for them.
To me, it seems that many of today's feminists are yesterdays marxists who have simply replaced class with
gender.
Therefore it's refreshing to see the new blog Kvinnobloggen (The Woman Blog).
It's founded by a number of women on the liberal/conservative end of the political field. In the first post the
founders write (my translation): "It's time to throw away the ideological straightjacket that want all people to be
shaped the same way. People's differences must be respected, and every single one should be given a chance to make full
use of their abilities, their interests and their dreams."
Hopefully they can steer the debate in a better direction.
For those of us who consider feminism to be a leftish ideology all the way, and who thinks that older principles
of equality are more than enough to deal with these kind of problems it's nice to see that more people than
ourselves have grown tired of the whole thing. For a rather entertaining read, have a look at
this column by Marie Söderqvist in Expressen.
(My translation)"Instead [of the women's day] I'd like a day when everyone talked about the importance of families - of
mother, father and child. A day when giving birth and people choosing to stay at home with their kids where celebrated.
A day when someone opposes professor Outi Hovatta at Huddinge who seriously claims that the most beautiful thing a woman
can ever do is to donate her eggs."
Hear, hear.
Not that I have anything against people who choose to live in other constellations than the traditional one. Not at all.
But it would be nice to see someone actually dare to stand up and say that there's nothing wrong with living in an ordinary
family.
